After putting together an impressive month of competition, Temple fencing senior Chantal Montrose has been named the Under Armour OwlSports.com Athlete of the Month for the month of February.
Montrose started the month by going 16-4 at the Northwestern Duals and earned the title of College Fencing 360 National Fencer of the Week. She helped then-ninth ranked Temple earn wins over #3 Notre Dame and Stanford, and turned in impressive 5-0 win vs. #1 Princeton veteran Susannah Scanlan, the 2013 NCAA runner-up and a member of the U.S. bronze-medal epee team at the 2012 Olympics.
She allowed each opponent only two touches in her sweep vs. Notre Dame, including wins over the All-America duo of Ashley Severson (5-2) and Nicole Ameli (3-2). Montrose had a winning record vs. Ohio State, including 5-4 victory over All-American Caroline Piasecka, and she also won 2-of-3 vs. Stanford, including a 5-3 bout vs. 2013 NCAA semifinalist Vivian Kong.
Montrose went 6-2 at the Duke Invitational a week later for the eighth-ranked Owls, helping the epee team win a trophy in addition to the Owls winning the meet as a team with a record of 5-0.
At the Temple Invitational on Feb. 22, Montrose went 7-5, recovering after some early losses to go 3-0 vs. #10 St. John's and 2-1 vs. #6 Penn State.
Just past the end of the month, Montrose won her fourth straight individual epee title at the NIWFA Championships on March 1.
