After an impressive month of competition, Temple fencing freshman Safa Ibrahim was named the Under Armour OwlSports.com Athlete of the Month for January, 2015.
Ibrahim started the month strong, taking eighth place individually among 111 competitors in junior women's epee at the January North American Cup. One week later, she went 9-6 at the Penn State Invite on Jan. 17, including a 2-1 record against #4 Penn State and a 2-1 record vs. UNC.
She finished with an identical record of 9-6 at the Philadelphia Invitational on Jan. 24, helping lead the #10 Owls to an undefeated record of 5-0.
To cap the month, Ibrahim finished an impressive 28-7 over the two-day Northwestern Duals, going 16-2 on the first day and 12-5 on the second day. Her day one record included four undefeated matches including a perfect 3-0 record against top-ranked Notre Dame. One of her victories over the Fighting Irish came against All-American Ashley Severson in a hard-fought 5-4 battle, and she also posted 3-0 records against Air Force, UNC and Cal Tech.
On day two, Ibrahim posted undefeated records of 3-0 against Detroit Mercy, UC San Diego and Lawrence. She went 2-0 against Stanford and won one of her bouts against #3 Princeton.
Ibrahim's overall Individual record for the month of January in team competition was 46-19.
