Nathan Burton
Nathan Burton
Nathan Burton joined Temple head coach Geoff Collins’ staff in February, 2018, as defensive backs coach. Burton and Collins were reunited after initially becoming connected in 2000 when Collins was a graduate assistant at Georgia Tech and Burton was a freshman walk-on.

Burton came to Philadelphia after one season at NC State. He joined the Wolfpack staff in 2017 as the quality control assistant for the defense.

Prior to his time at NC State, Burton served as the defensive coordinator at West Alabama for three seasons. In 2016 at UWA, he coached first-team All-Gulf South Conference BANDIT Darius Ellis, while punt returner Donta Armstrong, through Burton's punt return schemes, was a Harlon Hill Award finalist, averaging 17.1 yards per return. In 2015, the Tigers led the GSC in rushing defense, ranked No. 17 nationally (Div. II) in third-down defense and No. 32 in tackles-for-loss. Burton mentored 2015 first-team All-Americans Quinton Harton (LB) and Jared Washington (DL) when that duo won first-team All-GSC honors. His 2014 squad led the GSC in total defense, pass defense, and interceptions, while LB Fred Barnes was a first-team all-conference performer and Dee Virgin landed with the Houston Texans.

Prior to his stint at UWA, Burton served as defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Shorter University in 2012-13. In 2012, the Shorter defense ranked second in the GSC in total defense, allowing 336.0 yards per game while recording 26 sacks and 79 tackles for loss. Over his two seasons with the program, the Hawks averaged 18.5 sacks and 70 tackles for loss per season. LB Demery Hawkins was named to the 2012 All-NCCAA squad after tallying a Shorter school-record 18 tackles for loss, while Laynce Sanders, a true freshman, broke the school’s single-season sack record with 8.5. In 2012, he helped guide Shorter to a 6-5 record during the transitional Division II year.

In two years as a linebackers and secondary coach at Tennessee-Martin, Burton helped direct a Skyhawk defense that led the Ohio Valley Conference in total defense in 2010 and was second in 2011. UTM punt returner CJ Estelle was a 2011 All-American, posting a 17.7 yards per return average, and LB Josh Bey earned first-team All-OVC honors. He also helped the Skyhawks win their first Sgt. York Trophy in program history (best OVC team in Tennessee).

After earning his B.S. in applied biology from Georgia Tech in 2005, Burton served as a graduate assistant coach for the Yellow Jackets before joining the staff at Oklahoma State.

A native of Lilburn, Ga., Burton earned a spot on Georgia Tech's roster as a walk-on freshman and earned a scholarship. "The Admiral" went on to become a four-year letterwinner as a Yellow Jackets' safety and was named the team’s Lifter of the Year in 2004.

Burton and his wife Britney have four sons: Charlie (8), Grady (5), Isaac (3) and William (16 months).
