Owl sophomore earns first weekly honor of career
PHILADELPHIA – Temple sophomore guard Juan Fernandez has been named the Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Week for the week ending December 13. Fernandez, who earns his first Big 5 honor of his career, averaged 21.5 points, 4.0 assists and 2.0 rebounds in leading the Owls to a 2-0 week.
The 6-4 Argentinean native scored a career-high 33 points in 75-65 win over #3/3 Villanova Sunday. It marked the first time Temple had defeated a Top 5 team since Feb. 20, 2000 (77-69 at top-ranked Cincinnati). He made career-best seven three-pointers (on nine attempts) in the contest. He also added 10 points in a road win at Miami on Dec. 8. For the week he shot 62.5% from field, 69.2% from three-point range and 80% from line.
For the season, Fernandez ranks second on the team with a 12.8 scoring average. He also leads the team in assists with a 4.0 average (5th in A-10), three-pointers made (2.4 per game, 5th in A-10) and three-point percentage (.436, 9th in A-10).
The Owls (8-2) are off this week for final examinations and next take the court on Saturday, December 19 (7:00 p.m./1210 AM WPHT) at unbeaten Seton Hall (8-0).
