PHILADELPHIA - Visits from Villanova and Kansas to the Liacouras Center highlight the 2009-10 Temple men's basketball non-conference schedule, director of athletics Bill Bradshaw announced today. The Wildcats, coming off a Final Four appearance last season, will visit on December 13, while Kansas, ranked #1 nationally in several preseason polls, will take on the two-time defending Atlantic 10 champions on January 2.
Kansas, which reached the NCAA Sweet 16 last season after winning the national title in 2008, will be making its first trip to Temple since December 30, 1940. Villanova returns nine letterwinners from last season's team that went 30-8 and fell to eventual national champion North Carolina in the Final Four.
"This is clearly a terrific schedule with opponents from some of the top basketball conferences in the country," head coach Fran Dunphy said. "We are looking forward to the challenge."
"Our non-conference schedule was ranked number one nationally in early January last season and I think we're heading in that direction again this year," Dunphy said.
Temple opens the season with a visit to Delaware in mid-November, the date still to be finalized, to kick-off the Philly Hoop Group Classic. The event continues against Siena, which has won NCAA Tournament games in consecutive seasons, on November 21 at the Liacouras Center. The tournament concludes on Thanksgiving weekend with games against Virginia Tech (November 27) and St. John's (November 28) at The Palestra.
The Cherry and White will host NIT Champion Penn State on December 5 and hit the road against Big East opponents Georgetown (November 17, ESPN) and Seton Hall (December 19), and Big 5 rival Penn (January 13).
As part of the Mid-American Conference agreement, TU will host Ball State (TBA) and Bowling Green (TBA) and visit Western Michigan (December 1), Miami-OH (December 8) and Northern Illinois (December 30).
In Atlantic 10 action, Dunphy's team will play home-and-home series with Saint Joseph's, La Salle and Rhode Island. NCAA qualifiers Xavier and Dayton will visit the Liacouras Center in conference play, along with Duquesne, George Washington and Massachusetts. Temple will travel to Charlotte, Fordham, Richmond, St. Bonaventure, and Saint Louis.
A total of 11 teams that reached the postseason will appear on Temple's schedule, including five NCAA qualifiers. Three of the NCAA teams reached the Sweet 16 or further.
Dates and times for the A-10 portion of the schedule will be announced at a later date.
