Women's Gymnastics Takes First Place At Liberty Classic

2.7.10 | Women's Gymnastics

Owls post a team score of 188.375

PHILADELPHIA— The Temple women's gymnastics team won the fourth-annual Liberty Classic inside Temple's McGonigle Hall with a convincing 188.375 over Ursinus (181.725), University of Pennsylvania (181.200) and West Chester (176.375). Ursinus' Kira Oldham-Curtis won the all-around crown with a 37.875 over Temple freshman Jean Alban (37.300).

The Cherry and White started the afternoon on the vault with a pair of 9.350 scores from freshman Brittany Clark (handspring tuck front) and Alban (layout Yurchenko). Sophomore Lexi Uscatu launched her handspring tuck front for a 9.500, setting up junior Katie Canning's 9.825 (Hristakieva).

Sophomore Corrine Williams followed suit with a clean layout Yurchenko (9.525) and fellow sophomore Kaity Watson closed out an impressive rotation with a 9.625 (Hristakieva) for a team total of 47.825.

In the second rotation, Temple moved to the uneven bars, an event that has proved inconsistent all season long. Such was the case this afternoon, as Temple hit three routines, but had to count two falls.

In the fifth and sixth lineup positions, Watson (giant full, giant blind, piked jaeger) and junior Chelsea Trouttman (Pak, giant full to double tuck dismount) scored a 9.550 and 9.350, respectively. Temple's team total of 45.875 brought the two-rotation total to a 93.700.

Temple's strongest event this season—the balance beam—was next and while the team had to count a fall, showed why they are currently ranked first in the ECAC conference on the event. Alban lead things off with a 9.400 (back-handspring, layout stepout; 1.5 dismount), junior co-captain Kathryn Ho kept the momentum moving with a 9.475 (back-handspring, layout stepout; switch leap, back tuck; cat leap, switch-side; gainer pike dismount). Williams saved a potential fall when her Popa jump nearly took her off the beam before going on to nail a 9.525 (back-handspring, layout stepout; switch leap, split half, standing layout stepout; stuck double full dismount). Canning brought in the fourth hit for the team with a solid 9.625 (one-arm back-handspring, whip; 1.5 dismount).

After the third rotation, Temple's beam total of 46.85 elevated them to a three-event total of 140.550. Temple took to the floor exercise in the fourth and final rotation with Alban once again setting the tone with a 9.325 (2.5 mount; double full dismount). Freshman Meg Walch drew the crowd in with a 9.325 of her own (front layout-front full; double full; rudi). Williams balked on her second tumbling pass but still posted a solid 9.625 (2.5 punch front; front layout-front full). Canning posted a team-high 9.800 (double pike, two front layouts to front pike; whip, 1.5, front pike). Senior Nina Oteri capped off the afternoon with a 9.750 (front double full; two front layouts; rudi), en route to a 47.825 team total.

The Temple women's gymnastics team will enjoy a bye week before heading to ECAC conference rival Towson University for the Towson Invite on Saturday, February 20. Towson—along with Wilson College—were scheduled to compete at this afternoon's competition, but were unable to attend due to inclement weather that blanketed the region. Temple's final home meet of the season will be the 2010 ECAC Championships, scheduled for Saturday, March 27 at noon.
