PHILADELPHIA – Michel'Le Daughtry (21), a student manager with the Temple University football team, passed away on March 22 at Jeanes Hospital, surrounded by her family. The junior psychology major battled leukemia.

A native of Newark, N.J., Daughtry (nicknamed Misha) was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, a blood cancer, in July 2008. After taking time off from school and undergoing chemotherapy, the three-year manager was told in the spring of 2009 that she was cancer free. In September 2009 Daughtry learned the cancer had returned. She then underwent a bone marrow transplant.

“Misha was the most courageous person I've ever known,” said Paul Kelley, the athletic equipment supervisor. “She was passionate, loyal, and such a pleasure to be around. Her smiling face brightened anyone's day. That is what I will remember about her always.”

Daughtry began working as a football manager for coach Waverly Jackson at Park View High School (South Hill, Va.). She joined Temple football as a manager as a freshman in 2007. To show their support, the Temple football players wore bright pink decals with her initials “MD” on their helmets during the 2009 season.

In April 2008, Temple football hosted the first of three Bone Marrow Donor Drives, registering and screening potential donors. The Owls set the national record by a collegiate team for screening 630 potential donors in 2008. Known for their extensive community service activities, the Owls' third drive last April was especially meaningful, dedicated to finding a donor for Daughtry.

Born January 9, 1990, Daughtry is survived by her mother Yonne Daughtry; her aunt and uncle Daraina and Al-Quaddir Vines; three younger sisters-- Eva, Kayla, and Jahida Daughtry; cousins Ahmad and Amaya Vines; and her Temple roommates/best friends Megan Kita, Jordan Joseph, Courtney Riches, Jade Shaffer, and Chantaya King.

An Open House celebrating Misha's life will be hosted for her family and friends on Sunday, April 3 at Edberg-Olson Hall (11th & Diamond Streets) at 2 p.m. All members of the Temple University community are invited to attend.
