MALVERN, PA - Temple men's golf, in sixth place entering the final round of the Wildcat Invitational, overcame a nine-stroke deficit to win the title by three strokes over Rhode Island Tuesday at the par 71 White Manor Country Club. It marked the first tournament win for the Owls since winning the 2011 URI Spring Invitational.
“It was a big win for us because this is a tournament that can jump start our season,” said Temple head coach Brian Quinn. “Every tournament that we play, including our conference championship, we should be a major competitor.”
Sophomore Matt Teesdale carded an one-over par 72 to lead the Owls on the final day while freshman Brandon Matthews and senior Devin Bibeau carded three-over rounds of 74. Matthews finished tied for sixth overall (69-77-74, 220) while Bibeau (76-75-74, 225) was tied for ninth. Teesdale (84-76-72, 232) was tied for 26th overall.
Sophomore Paul Carbone also was solid for the Owls, carding a four-over 76 on the day. He tied for 22nd overall with a three-day total of 231 (76-79-76). Junior Matthew Crescenzo (76-81-80, 237) rounded out the TU golfers, tying for 48th.
Temple posted a three-day total of 900 with Rhode Island placing second with a 903. Host Villanova (905) tied for third with Georgetown. They were followed by Delaware (907), Youngstown State (908), Drexel (915), Fordham (924), Bucknell (928), Army (930), Saint Joseph's (938), La Salle (950) and Villanova B (952).
