Men's Soccer Faces #22 USF on the Road Saturday

PHILADELPHIA – Temple men's soccer travels to Tampa, Fla. to face No. 22 USF on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Owls look to win their second straight conference win after opening up conference play with a 2-0 at home against Cincinnati last Saturday. USF is also 1-0 in conference games after defeating UConn 1-0 in overtime last Saturday.

HEADLINES
- Temple is 2-6-1 to open the 2014 season. The Owls defeated Cincinnati 2-0 last Saturday in the American Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Junior midfielder/forward Jared Martinelli and redshirt-senior forward Chas Wilson both scored goals to lead the Owls to a victory.
- Redshirt-freshman midfielder Miguel Polley and Martinelli were selected to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll. Martinelli scored the game-winning goal for Temple in the first half vs. Cincinnati. He finished with three shots on goal and now has two goals on the season. Polley assisted on both Temple goals against Cincinnati with touch passes. Polley is now tied for the team lead in points (five) with one goal and three assists.
- Sophomore defender Robert Sagel, senior goalkeeper Dan Scheck and Martinelli were selected to the Preseason All-American Athletic Conference Team. Scheck was voted by the coaches as the Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year.
- 12 underclassmen have started a game for Temple. 16 total underclassmen have appeared in a game.
- Five freshmen have started at least four games for the Owls: midfielder Felipe Liborio (eight games), Polley (seven), defender Mark Grasela (four), midfielder Brendon Creed (seven), and forward Olli Tynkkynen (five).
- Temple was predicted to finish fifth in the conference by the preseason coaches' poll.
- Scheck is currently the career leader in goals allowed average (0.77) and ranks fourth in career wins (16).
- Sagel has played all 843 minutes of the season. Sophomore defender Matt Mahoney is second in minutes played with 801.
- No. 22 USF comes into the game with a 5-3-0, 1-0-0 record. The Bulls have won three of their last four games, including their conference opener at preseason favorite UConn 1-0 in overtime. The win against the Huskies vaulted USF into the polls for the first time this season.
- The Bulls were picked to finish second in the American Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll.
- Senior midfielder Lucas Baldin leads the team in assists (five) and points (11) and is tied for the team lead in goals (three). His five assists lead the conference.
- Senior defender Wesley Charpie was named a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award, one of the top honors for men's soccer. Charpie has three assists on the season.
- Goalkeeper Spasoj Stefanovic has allowed only seven goals this season, tops in the American Athletic Conference. Stefanovic has recorded three shutouts and 25 saves.
- USF leads the all-time series 1-0-1 with both games occurring last season. The two teams tied 1-1 on Oct. 12. Wilson scored the game-tying goal in the first half for Temple. USF defeated Temple in the quarterfinal round of the postseason conference tournament 1-0 on Nov. 9 in route to winning the championship and a bid to the NCAA tournament.
- Temple is coming off 10-4-4, 3-1-4 season where they finished fourth in the conference.
- Sagel and Martinelli were selected to the 2013 all-conference second teams. Sagel was put on the all-freshmen team.
