Volleyball Set to Host Temple Invitational This Friday and Saturday

PHILADELPHIA - After starting the season undefeated with a record of 3-0, Temple volleyball now begins its home slate by hosting the Temple Invitational this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 5-6. The Owls will host Charlotte on Friday at 6:00 p.m., and will play both Princeton and Holy Cross on Saturday. The tournament features three matches each day, beginning with Charlotte vs. Princeton at 12:30 p.m. on Friday. Admission is free for all fans to all six matches. This year marks the fifth consecutive hosting of the Temple Invitational for the Owls, who won the team title in 2012 and narrowly finished as runners-up in 2013.Â
Charlotte comes into Friday's match with a record of 3-2, having played more than any other team in the tournament so far. The 49ers, a former opponent of Temple's from the Atlantic 10, have a new head coach in Gokhan Yilmaz. In 2013, Charlotte finished with a record of 12-17. Holy Cross is looking for its first win after an 0-3 weekend to start the season. The Crusaders went 7-21 last season, and are led by coach Erin Cady in her fourth season. Princeton will be playing in its first match of the season on Friday. The Tigers, coached by Sabrina King (fourth season), went 10-14 a year ago.
Temple has never faced Holy Cross, but leads Charlotte 8-6 in the all-time series and trails Princton 3-6 all-time.
HEADLINES
•    The Owls went a perfect 3-0 to start the season, capturing the team title at the Syracuse Invitational last weekend...Their three wins included sweeps of both Niagara and Delaware State.
•    Sophomore Kirsten Overton was named the Tournament MVP of the Syracuse Invitational, and was also named to the All-Tournament Team and the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll.
•    Sophomore Caroline Grattan joined Overton on the Syracuse Invitational All-Tournament Team.
•    Overton committed only two hitting errors in Temple's three matches, and knocked down a career-high 15 kills in the Owls' five-set win at Syracuse while also hitting a career-best .652...For the weekend she recorded a league-best hitting percentage of .592.
•    Grattan amassed 46 total kills for the weekend (4.18 per set) while also recording 24 digs (2.18 per set)...She put up impressive numbers on offense in the final match against Delaware State, leading all players with 15 kills while also recording seven digs and three blocks.
•    Temple was picked to finish ninth in the 2014 Preseason American Athletic Conference Coaches  Poll, out of the 11 teams in the league this year.
•    There are six true freshmen on the Owls' 16-person roster this season, including five from out of state and one from overseas (Dara Peric/Serbia)...The Owls have another international player in junior Sandra Sydlik (Germany).
•    Freshman Dara Peric stepped right into the lineup for Temple this past weekend, playing in nine of 11 sets and ranking third on the team in total kills with 21 (2.33 kills/set).
•    The Owls finished as runners-up in last year's Temple Invitational, sweeping Brown and Delaware State but falling 3-1 to tournament champ Hofstra.
•    This weekend marks the fifth consecutive year in which the Owls will host the Temple Invitational...They recorded one team win in the event, in 2012.
•    Temple finished at 18-12 in 2013, marking the Owls' second-straight season with a winning percentage of .600 or better.
•    Head Coach Bakeer Ganes is now in his fourth year at the helm of the program, with an overall record of 48-43...His record for the last two seasons (2012 and 2013) was 37-23.
SYRACUSE INVITATIONAL CHAMPSÂ Â Â
With a 3-0 sweep of Delaware State on Sunday, Aug. 31, Temple volleyball finished the weekend with a perfect record of 3-0 to win the team title at the Syracuse Invitational. The Owls took down the Hornets on the final day by scores of 25-12, 25-8 and 25-18.Â
On the opening day, Aug. 30, Temple also swept Niagara by scores of 25-17, 25-21 and 25-21. Later that day, it was a five-set thriller vs. host Syracuse. The teams traded sets back and forth, but ultimately it was Temple coming out on top in the fifth and final set by a score of 15-13.
OVERTON, OVER AND OVER AGAINÂ Â Â
Sophomore middle blocker Kirsten Overton notched a .652 hitting percentage in Temple's five-set win at Syracuse, the best by a player from The American so far in 2014. She also knocked down a career-high 15 kills in that contest. For the weekend, Overton hit a conference-leading .592.
Overton's efforts led to her being named the Syracuse Invitational Tournament MVP, and she was also named to The American's Weekly Honor Roll.
GRATTAN STEPPING UPÂ Â Â
Sophomore Caroline Grattan came into the year as the leader among returning players for kills from 2013, and she has only put up even stronger numbers so far. Grattan averaged 4.18 kills per set over Temple's three matches (all wins) at the Syracuse Invitational, totaling 46 kills overall. She recorded 15 kills against both Niagara and Delaware State (three-set sweeps) and tallied 16 kills in the five-set win against Syracuse.
Grattan, along with Overton, was named to the Syracuse Invitational All-Tournament Team.
