10.24.15 | Men's Soccer
AMBLER, Pa. – Following a pre-game salute to its four seniors, Temple men's soccer earned its second conference victory on Saturday, topping Cincinnati, 3-1. The win was potentially the final game at the Ambler Sports Complex and was played with the 1985 NCAA Temple team in attendance.
The Owls' victory is their 10th of the season, making this the sixth 10-win season for head coach David MacWilliams and third in the last four seasons.
The Bearcats took the early lead, with Stefan Bangsund slid in the first goal of the day in the 16th minute. Less than two minutes later, Jorge Gomez Sanchez earned a penalty kick that was saved and rebounded to the feet of Belal Mohamed who sunk the equalizer into the bottom right corner.
In the 39th minute, Mohamed and Gomez Sanchez teamed up again. Mohamed took a breakaway run up the side of the field and crossed to find Gomez Sanchez who beat two defenders and fired the Owls' second goal into the back of the net.
The goal was Gomez Sanchez's 13th of the season, which has him tied for fifth in the Owls' record books for single-season goals. Gomez Sanchez's 13 goals is also the most by a single player in a season since 1997.
The Owls' final goal was knocked in off a second penalty kick by Carlos Moros Gracia, making the final score 3-1. This is Moros Gracia's third goal of the season.
Overall, Temple men's soccer outshot the Bearcats 20-5, with goalkeeper Alex Cagle making two saves to limit Cincinnati to a single goal.
The Owls now stand at 10-5-2 overall, and 2-5 in the conference. They will play their final regular season match next Saturday, Oct. 31, on the road against conference leader SMU.
