Blanca Fernandez Breaks 1,500 Meter School Record at George Mason Invitational

FAIRFAX, Va. - In her first action of the 2015 outdoor season, junior Blanca Fernandez set a new school record in the 1,500 meter run at the George Mason Invitational. Fernandez was the top collegiate finisher in the event and placed second overall with her record-breaking time of 4:21.61. The only performer finishing before Fernandez was a professional runner competing in the meet.

The Owls had several other strong performances on the day including two top-five relay finishes. The 4x400m relay team made up of senior Hollis Coleman and junior Demeshia Davis, along with sophomores Kenya Gaston and Bionca St. Fleur, placed second with a time of 3:47.23. Davis, junior Courtney Mitchell, and sophomores Jimmia McCluskey and St. Fleur, finished fifth in the 4x100m relay in 47.24 seconds.

In field events, McCluskey placed fourth in the long jump with a distance of 5.72m and sophomore Sydnee Jacques finished fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 11.80m.

Personal bests were set on Saturday by Mitchell in the 100m dash (12.38), senior Andrea Mathis in the 1,500m run (4:54.87), and freshman Attallah Goodman in the 400m hurdles (1:05.23).

Next weekend the Owls will be competing in Baltimore, Md. at the Morgan State Legacy meet on April 17-18.
