#17 Men's Soccer Earns Sixth Consecutive Win With 4-1 Victory Over La Salle
9.23.15 | Men's Soccer
Ambler, Pa. – After jumping six spots in the national rankings, #17 Temple men's soccer earned its sixth consecutive win Wednesday afternoon with a 4-1 victory over Soccer Six rival La Salle. Currently standing at 7-0-1 this season, the Owls are off to their best start and their highest national ranking since 1985.
With today's win, the Owls have swept their city matchups moving into conference play.
"I'm really happy. Anytime you're playing the city schools and it's that rivalry, it's always a very competitive game," said head coach David MacWilliams. "To win three of those games, I am very happy."
Each Temple goal was scored by a different player today, with the first coming from freshman Belal Mohamed. In the 19th minute, Justin Stoddart found Mohamed who went on to win a one-on-one with the Explorers' goalkeeper to find the back of the net. The goal was a career first for Mohamed.
Stoddart kept the momentum going after finding the Owls' second goal in the 35th minute. Junior Kevin Klett slid a pass to Stoddart, leaving him with a clear shot to be tucked away.
Only four minutes into the second half, junior Stefan Mueller sent a clean cross from the left side that found classmate Dan White who was able to head in the Owls' third goal and first career goal.
The Explorers fired back in the 85th minute on their ninth and final corner kick of the game. The kick was served by Ryan Nork and caused a scramble in front of the net that was captured and touched in by Conor Nichols.
Rounding out the goals for the Owls was senior Josh Tagland. In the 89th miniute, classmate Dalton Andrusko sent a clean pass from the right side to find Tagland who shot from outside of the box into the top left corner to make the final score 4-1. The goal was a career first for the senior.
"To have four different guys score today was pretty good," said MacWilliams. "We wanted to make sure that there's other guys that could put the ball in the back of the net and we have those players. They stepped up today and I'm really happy."
The Owls were able to outshoot the Explorers 14-6 throughout the match. The back line proved dominant as ever, clearing out eight of nine total corner kicks taken by La Salle and allowing only two shots to go on target.
Next up for the Owls is their conference opener against Cincinnati on the road. The match is set for Saturday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m.
