Men's Basketball Outlasts Cincinnati in Double-Overtime Thriller, 67-65
1.16.16 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - Outlasting Cincinnati in a double overtime thriller, Temple men's basketball completed the regular season sweep of the Bearcats with a 67-65 win on Saturday afternoon at the Liacouras Center. Jaylen Bond scored the final points in both overtime periods, including a tip-in with 16 seconds left in the second overtime to lift the Owls to the win.
Temple improves to 9-7 overall an 4-2 in the American Athletic Conference, while Cincinnati now stands at 13-6 overall and 3-3 in league play.
Quenton DeCosey was the game's leading scorer with 22 points, and Bond finished with nine points and a team-best 12 rebounds. Devin Coleman came off the bench for 15 points, hitting five three-pointers. Coleman's final trey came in the second overtime period, tying the game with a minute and 30 seconds left after the Owls had trailed by three.
Following Coleman's shot to tie the game at 65-65, Temple kept Cincinnati from scoring on its next possession. Back on the Owls' end they missed two shots of their own, but Bond corralled his ninth offensive rebound and scored with 16 seconds left for the final tally. Temple forced Cincinnati's 16th turnover with six seconds left, and the Bearcats never took a shot until a full-court heave at the buzzer after a rebound on a missed Temple free throw.
The game was low-scoring throughout with both teams struggling from the field, but Temple's seven shots from long range made the difference. Cincinnati came into the game as the conference's leader in three-pointers made per game at 7.9, and ranked third with a .366 three-point field-goal percentage. The Owls held them to just a single trey, as the Bearcats finished at 1-of-18 (5.6 percent).
The Owls got off to a hot start in the first half, rattling off nine straight points for a 9-2 lead five minutes in. They forced four Cincinnati turnovers in that stretch. The Bearcats rallied back to within one at 9-8, and the score remained tight for the rest of the period.
Temple remained in the lead until final minute of the first half when Cincinnati tied the game and then took a 24-22 lead into the break on a Gary Clark tip-in with five seconds left.
DeCosey scored 10 of Temple's 22 first-half points, hitting 4-of-7 from the field. Octavius Ellis matched his output with a team-high 10 points for Cincinnati.
The Owls started the second half just like the first, with a 9-2 run fueled by four points from DeCosey. The run gave them a five-point lead at 16:58, and they matched it at 15:36 before Cincinnati was able to tie the score for the first time in the second half at 39-39 with 12:06 remaining.
After another tie at 41-41, Coleman hit back-to-back three-pointers to start an 8-2 run for the Owls. Mark Williams followed it with a trey of his own at 6:48, giving Temple its largest lead of eight, 52-44.
From there, the Bearcats rallied once again, with a 9-2 broken up only by a layup from Bond. The run put Cincinnati within a point, 54-53 with 2:21 to go.
The teams were scoreless for a minute and a half until Brown hit a floater for a three-point, 56-53 lead under the one-minute mark. Cincinnati's Troy Caupain hit just 1-of-2 free throws after Temple fouled at the other end, but the Owls turned the ball over with 26 seconds left against full-court pressure from the Bearcats. Caupain then scored a putback to tie it up at 56-56 with 11 seconds remaining, and the Owls were unable to come up with a winning shot in regulation.
Coleman got overtime started with his third three-pointer, but it would be the only field goal for either team in over four minutes. Cincinnati's Ellis hit a pair of free throws to bring the Bearcats to within a point at 59-58, and Caupain scored their first field goal at 46 seconds to put Cincinnati up 60-59.
After three misses for Temple at the other end, Bond was fouled on his third offensive rebound in a row with 10 seconds left. He hit his first free throw but missed the second, and the Owls kept the Bearcats scoreless at the other end to force a second overtime.
