Temple Heads to UConn for a Conference Road Test

11.1.16 | Football

PHILADELPHIA - Temple (6-3, 4-1 American) is now on a three-game winning streak and will head to Hartford, Conn., to take on Eastern Division rival UConn (3-6, 1-5 AAC). The game is scheduled for Friday, November 4, at 7:00 p.m. and will air on ESPN2 and 97.5 The Fanatic, Temple football's flagship radio station. The Owls continued their stellar play last week with a 34-13 win over the Cincinnati Bearcats, and control their own destiny in an attempt to finish first in the American Athletic Conference East Division for the second straight year. The offense continues to improve drastically, and has averaged 34.6 PPG during the three-game winning streak. A big reason for that is the unquestioned leadership of senior QB Phillip Walker, who now has 13 passing TDs on the year, while the offense has managed 405.3 yards per game. The rushing attack continues to serve as a big strength as senior RB Jahad Thomas ran for a season-high 151 yards in the win over Cincinnati while sophomore RB Ryquell Armstead's two scores on the ground now have him tied for 10th in the nation for rushing touchdowns. The trio of playmakers will have their hands full with a UConn defense that only allows 125.3 rushing yards per game, good for second in the conference. The Owls' defense has played exceptionally well, only allowing 306.0 yards per game, which ranks 11th in the nation and second in the conference. The unit will go against a UConn offense that averages 234.7 passing yards per game.

LAST WEEK
Temple continues to roll through conference play as they pulled out a 34-13 win over Cincinnati in front of 29,763 fans at Lincoln Financial Field. A key performance was turned in by senior QB Phillip Walker, who notched two passing scores on the afternoon and did not have a turnover. The ground game was sensational once again as senior RB Jahad Thomas compiled a season-high 151 yards while sophomore RB Ryquell Armstead had his second consecutive game with two touchdowns. The defense continues to hold its own as well, limiting the Bearcats to just 13 points, the lowest against any FBS opponent this year. Senior LB Avery Williams led the team in tackles for the second time this season (7) and had a forced fumble. Special teams continues to play a huge factor for the Owls as senior DL Avery Ellis notched a blocked punt for the second consecutive week and junior DB Cequan Jeferson had a fumble recovery on a kickoff.

LAST TIME
During last season's matchup with the Huskies, Temple won 37-3 and clinched the American Athletic Conference East Division title, helping the Owls to the school's first conference championship appearance since 2009. Standout performances came from RB Jahad Thomas, who had 119 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, and QB Phillip Walker, who went 19-for-29 and had a passing touchdown to TE Romond Deloatch.

UP NEXT
Temple gets a rest with its only bye week of the season following the matchup with UConn. The Owls will then get ready to travel down to New Orleans for the final road game of the regular season to take on Tulane.
