Temple Athletics Ranked in Top 25 for NCAA Graduation Success Rate

11.15.16 | General

PHILADELPHIA – Temple Athletics cracked the Top 25 where it matters most - graduating its student-athletes.  Data released today by the NCAA shows that Temple University student-athletes posted an 88 percent Graduation Success Rate (GSR), which sets a school-record for the seventh consecutive year. Temple also posted its highest Federal Graduation Rate (71%) since 2010.

Temple's overall GSR number is tied for 24th among all Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools.  Temple Football posted a GSR of 86, which is tied for 14th with Nebraska and Miami (Fla.). Temple is also one of 11 FBS schools in the country who has all teams over 77 in GSR.  The other 10 schools are Alabama, Duke, Michigan, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Stanford, Tulane, UCF, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech.

"We are so proud of our student-athletes, coaches and academic support staff for this tremendous accomplishment," said Temple University Director of Athletics Dr. Patrick Kraft. "Winning on the playing field is important, but success in the classroom and the earning of degrees lasts a lifetime.  Justin Miller and his talented staff at the Nancy & Donald Resnick Academic Support Center for Student-Athletes have supported our students with integrity and we are grateful for their efforts, though the true recognition and appreciation is for our students whose diligence and commitment led to incredible results."

There are only eight higher GSR scores, achieved by 23 institutions, than Temple's 88 percent rate. Likewise, there are only 12 higher Federal Rates, achieved by 19 schools, than Temple's 71 percent rate. The data covers scholarship student-athletes who were admitted to Temple University between 2006 to 2009.

Six Owl sports earned perfect 100 GSR —  Men's Golf, Men's Soccer, Women's Fencing, Women's Lacrosse, Men's Tennis, and Women's Tennis. Both of Temple's tennis programs accomplished the feat for the seventh straight year.

Seven of TU's sports tied or earned all-time high GSRs for their respective programs, including Football (86), which will have 25 current members of the team earn their undergraduate degrees by December 2016 - many of whom are already enrolled in graduate programs.  Football also owns the second-best improvement among all FBS schools since 2005 while Temple's overall GSR improvement ranks 15th nationally.

"The public release of Temple's graduation rates serves as continuation of the outstanding story of exceptional effort and determination of Temple's student-athletes, as well as the outstanding commitment to academic excellence by Temple Athletics and its coaches," said Miller, Temple University's Senior Director, Resnick Academic Support Center for Student-Athletes. "We could not be more proud of the earned success of our student-athletes and the fact that the annual release of such data has become a point of pride for the University."

The NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) is designed to reflect the proportion of student-athletes on any given team who earn a college degree within a six-year window of their initial enrollment. The GSR was developed in response to colleges and universities who asked for an alternative rate that more accurately reflects the movement among college student-athletes. The GSR takes into account incoming transfers who graduate from a different institution than the one they started at and transfers who leave an institution in good standing.

The Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) is compiled by the U.S. Department of Education and is used as an indicator of academic success for all college students, including student-athletes. FGR measures the percentage of first-time, full-time freshman who enter in the fall semester and graduate within six years of entering their original four-year institution.
