2.11.16 | Football
PHILADELPHIA - The National Football League today announced the list of 332 players invited to participate in the 2016 NFL Combine later this month in Indianapolis, Ind. Included on that list are three Temple Owls - DL Matt Ioannidis, LB Tyler Matakevich, and DB Tavon Young.
Â
The NFL Combine will take place from Feb. 23-29 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Representatives from every NFL team will be on hand to evaluate the top players eligible for this year's draft. The 2016 NFL Draft will take place in Chicago on April 28-30.
Â
Ioannidis is one of 62 defensive linemen invited to the combine, the deepest position. The 6-4, 292-lb. senior earned first-team all-conference and third-team All-America honors from Phil Steele. A four-year letter winner, he played in 43 career games with 115 tackles, 29.0 tackles for loss, and 10.0 sacks. The Ringoes, N.J., native was a two-time captain and earned his degree in communication studies.
Â
Matakevich is the most decorated player in Temple history winning both the Chuck Bednarik Award and Bronco Nagurski Trophy as the nation's best defensive player. He was a consensus first-team All-America after a senior season when he posted 126 tackles, 4.5 sacks and five interceptions - the most in the nation among linebackers. He is the school's all-time leader with 493 career tackles. He became just the seventh player in FBS history to record four seasons of 100+ tackles. The Stratford, Conn., native became Temple's first-ever three-time captain. He will be among 39 linebackers to attend the combine.
Â
Young was a four-year letter winner and three-year starter at cornerback. As a senior, he didn't stockpile statistics but was effective in shutting down opponents receivers. The 5-10, 180-lb. senior was second on the team with seven passes broken up and added a career-high 5.0 tackles for loss. As a junior, the Oxon Hill, Md., product notched four interceptions for a conference leading 153 return yards. He also scored twice - once on a 93-yard interception return and again on a 63-yard fumble recovery. Young will be among 59 defensive backs at the combine.
Â
All three are expected to participate in Temple's on-campus Pro Day on Wednesday, March 16.
