#1/1 Villanova Snaps Men's Basketball's Win Streak; Takes Big 5 Title
2.17.16 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - The high-powered offense of #1/1 Villanova snapped a five-game win streak for Temple men's basketball on Wednesday night, as the Wildcats (23-3, 4-0 Big 5) won 83-67 in front of a Liacouras Center-record crowd of 10,472. The Owls (16-9, 2-2 Big 5) cut a 23-point second-half deficit to 11, but could come no closer.
Villanova earns its third straight outright Philadelphia Big 5 title with a perfect record of 4-0. The Wildcats got a game-high 25 points from freshman Jalen Brunson, who hit 9-of-11 from the field.
Freshmen led both teams in the city series contest, as Temple got a career-high 21 points from Trey Lowe who made 5-of-8 three-pointers. Three others also reached double figures in scoring for the Owls, including sophomore Obi Enechionyia with 15 points and nine rebounds.
After briefly leading 9-8 in the first half, the game began to get away from the Owls as Phil Booth scored six straight points in an 8-0 Villanova run that put the Wildcats up by seven.
Another run for the visitors put the Owls down by 12 with seven minutes remaining, and they later trailed by 14 on two occasions. Coming off the bench for the latter portion of the half, Josh Brown was a bright spot for Temple's offense with 10 of the Owls' last 12 points in the period.
Villanova shot 46 percent to the Owls' 38 percent, and led 35-23 at the break. Temple hit just 1-of-10 from long range, while the Wildcats made 4-of-11.
The Owls continued to struggle early in the second half, and Villanova built its first 20-point lead in the opening six minutes. The Wildcats led by as many as 23 at the midway point of the half, but Lowe later capped a 10-0 run with back-to-back three-pointers, cutting the margin to 12, 65-53 with 7:22 remaining.
Temple got within 11 at the 2:30 mark, but was outscored 8-3 the rest of the way. Senior Quenton DeCosey finished just shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds, while Brown finished with 13 points and four assists for Temple.
Next up, the Owls hit the road for two American Athletic Conference contests starting with a 7 p.m. game at Houston on Sunday, Feb. 21 (ESPNews/1210 AM WPHT).
