PHILADELPHIA (3/2/16 – 2:00 p.m.) – The official countdown can begin. One hundred eighty-four days and five hours till the Temple Owls begin defense of their 2015 American Athletic Conference East Division title. It was announced today that the season opening game against Army at Lincoln Financial Field will kickoff at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night, September 2. The game will be broadcast nationally by CBS Sports Network.
The schedule was announced just a few weeks ago. Further announcements on nationally televised game times – at Memphis (Thursday, 10/6), vs. USF (Friday, 10/21) and at UConn (Friday, 11/4) – are expected in the coming weeks.
Temple will open the year with four consecutive non-conference matchups. The season will kickoff with two home games at Lincoln Financial Field – the Army game followed by a first-ever meeting with Stony Brook on the 10th. The Owls take a trip to State College, Pa., for a battle with in-state rival Penn State on September 17, before returning for Homecoming weekend on Saturday, September 24, against Charlotte.
The Owls will begin conference play on October 1 when the Owls host SMU. This will be the fifth meeting with SMU but the first in Philadelphia. Back-to-back games in late October, including the Friday night tilt against USF, highlight the home schedule. The Owls seek revenge against the Bulls who knocked the Owls out of the Top 25 late last season (albeit just for one week) before hosting Cincinnati, a perennial favorite to lead the conference. The home slate closes with a matchup against East Carolina on November 26.
For the second straight year, the American Athletic Conference will hold a Championship game. The two division winners meet at the home of the school with the better record. In the inaugural game, Temple traveled to Houston and lost 24-13. This season, the Owls look to bring that game, on Saturday, December 3, to Philadelphia.
Temple plays seven home games this year and just five road games. The bye week will take place in mid-November, after playing 10 straight games.
