Temple Celebrates National Girls & Women in Sports Day for Fourth Straight Year
4.7.16 | General, Outreach
PHILADELPHIA – The Temple University Athletics Department hosted an event on Wednesday, April 6, celebrating the 30th Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). Local students in grades eight and below from the Philadelphia area came to Temple's Pavilion and tennis courts where they participated in clinics with student-athletes from many of Temple's sports programs.
It was fourth straight year in which Temple Athletics has hosted such an event. Many of the local girls at this year's event came from nearby Duckrey Elementary School at 15th and Diamond Streets. Other students also came from William McKinley School and William H. Hunter School. In addition to trying out various sports, participants and athletes danced along with the music of DJ Dee Square throughout the afternoon.
The girls spent two hours rotating between 12 different stations that included representatives from all of Temple's 19 varsity sports. This year marked the first time Temple's men's teams were present, giving kids the chance to experience golf and football.
The variety of sports is one of the highlights of the event for the participants, who generally have not had a chance to try the less mainstream activities.
"These girls come out here just looking for sports, and half of the sports they've never seen before, so it's a good exposure for them," said field hockey's Maiyah Brown. "They get to learn something new from what they're normally used to and it's just a good experience."
Matt Mahoney of the men's soccer team spoke about what the event meant to all involved. "I think it was a great opportunity for all these teams to be able to help these local kids learn a little about the sport and have some fun while we're doing it. I think it's great to see all the sports teams that were able to come out and support these kids, and it was a great chance for them to come out and see what Temple's about. I just think it's a great opportunity for everybody."
Assistant AD/Creative Services Kelli Sheesley spearheads the event along with a committee made up of a number of others within the department.
Knowing the participants would be hungry after a long day at school and a couple hours of sports, the planning committee was committed to getting donations of healthy food and water. Before departing for the day, each girl was given a gift bag. The bag, donated by PFCU, included water, granola bars, a "portion plate" with imprints to teach the kids how much of each food group is healthy during a meal, Under Armour headbands and a nutrition flyer put together by Temple Strength & Conditioning Coach Clare Kaufman about healthy habits.
Temple Athletics would like to sincerely thank all of the following groups for donating time and/or items for the event:
