Men's Soccer Announces 2016 Match Schedule

6.2.16 | Men's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – The upcoming season for Temple men's soccer is quickly approaching and with a new supporting staff and new stadium in the works, the excitement following a successful 2015 season is high for the Owls. Entering his 17th season, head coach David MacWilliams has recently released a packed 2016 schedule.

"We are all very excited about this year's schedule," said coach MacWilliams. "It will be interesting having more away conference matches than home. Our non-conference schedule will also be a good challenge for our guys so it's looking we have a strong season ahead of us."

Following two exhibition games, the season will kick off with a four-game homestead featuring Manhattan, St. Joes, Pittsburgh, and Northeastern.  These games will be played in the Owls' brand new facility set to be raised on the site of the former William Penn High School located at Broad and Master Streets.

"The new stadium is going to be great for us and our opponents," said coach MacWilliams. "It gives us a lot of new opportunities and will make us more competitive on turf fields. The team is really looking forward to starting to get to work over there."

The Owls will hit the road for the first time on September 10 at Rider for a 7:00 p.m. matchup against the Broncs.

After a local game against Drexel (September 13) and hosting Fairfield (September 17), the Owls open up American Athletic Conference play on the road against UConn on September 24. Remaining on the road, the Owls will head to State College, Pa. for a meeting with Penn State on September 27 to close out the month.

October will see the bulk of the Owls' conference play with the conference home opener set for October 1 against Memphis. The October conference slate will also see SMU (October 8) and Cincinnati (October 15) on the road and Tulsa (October 22) and UCF (October 29) at home.

Philadelphia Soccer Six opponent Villanova will play the Owls at home on October 4. The non-conference schedule is wrapped up with a road trip to Columbia on October 11 and a Delaware home match on October 18.

The regular season finale will be on the road at USF on November 5. The American Athletic Conference Tournament kicks off with the semifinal round on November 11 with the finals hosted by the top seed on November 13.

"This team has a lot of talent and with the new facility and this schedule, I think we can make a strong stance in the conference," said coach MacWilliams. "We are ready to get to work and improve on last year's success."

Last season, the Owls recorded an impressive 10-7-2 record and two weeks in the national rankings. Despite the strong start, the Owls finished the season with only two conference wins and will be looking to make a stronger splash in conference play in 2016.
