Women's Soccer Falls to Drexel 2-1 in Season Opener

8.19.16 | Women's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's soccer lost to Drexel 2-1 in the inaugural game at the new Temple Sports Complex Friday night.  The historic match was played in front of an overflow crowd of 641 fans.

Temple started the game on a fast pace as they were able to take nine corner kicks in the first half, most of which came before Drexel scored its first goal at 15:55 off the foot of Shaelyn McCarty with an assist by Vanessa Kara.

Drexel struck again right before the end of the first half. At 41:59, Madison Dunn tallied in the goal mouth off a corner kick.

The Owls cut the deficit in the 59th minuite as sophomore Sarah McGlinn became the first Owl to score on their new pitch off a pass from senior Elaine Byerley.

Temple had a chance to tie as the Dragons were called for a foul in the box in the 83rd minute, setting up a penalty kick.  Drexel keeper Christina Ogunsami was up for the challenge, denying the Owls' Gabriella McKeown on the PK attempt.

Temple finished the game with 15 shots compared to Drexel's 21. The Owls did, however, have more corner kicks. The team finished with 11 total, while the Dragons compiled just five.

Despite the loss, head coach Seamus O'Connor was happy with his team's performance and said that despite the outcome, game one was a success.

"We played great – absolutely fantastic," O'Connor said. "I'm pleased with where we are at after game one."

Newcomers Cydney Niedermeyer and Emily Keitel played all 90 minutes for the team in their first game as Temple Owls.

Other freshmen to contribute in tonight's match include Fran Davis (63 minutes), KJ Waghorne (40 minutes), Morgan Morroco (51 minutes), Lacey Powell (21 minutes) and Jules Blank (28 minutes).

O'Connor was pleased to see so many new faces on the field for the team.

"It was crazy how many freshman came off the bench and made an impact," O'Connor said. "It was phenomenal!"

The Owls are back in action on Sunday as they travel to Delaware to take on the Hornets of Delaware State.
