Women’s Soccer Powers by Delaware State for 5-0 Victory

8.21.16 | Women's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's soccer program picked up its first victory of the season as the Owls routed Delaware State, 5-0, on Sunday at the DSU Alumni Stadium. This is the team's sixth consecutive win over Delaware State and the second year in a row by a score of 5-0.

The Owls started off quick, jumping out to a 1-0 lead during the eighth minute as the freshmen combination of Jules Blank and Fran Davis connected for the tally.  Davis finished a crossing pass from Blank for what would prove to be the game-winner. This goal signified both student-athletes' first collegiate point.

Not long after, junior Elana Falcone sent a through ball to junior Gabriella McKeown, who snuck it passed Delaware State goalkeeper Michele Lammers. This gave the Owls a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

It didn't take long for the Owls to keep the momentum rolling. Just 23 seconds following the break, sophomore Sarah McGlinn received a pass from McKeown and blasted a shot for a goal. It was McGlinn's second goal of the season, as she had the team's lone goal in the season opener against Drexel.

Delaware State then had a chance to get into the goal column on a penalty kick. However sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Nash made a great save to shut down the Hornets' opportunity.

It was Nash's lone save in recording the shutout.

During the 77th minute, McKeown netted a pass from freshman Emily Keitel. McKeown finished the game with two goals and one assist, while Keitel earned her first career point.

Just three minutes later, freshman speedster Morgan Morocco took it 40 yards and blasted a shot for her first career goal for the Owls' final tally of the day.

Four freshmen were involved in the scoring as head coach Seamus O'Connor made some changes to the lineup.

"Made a lot of changes to starting lineup," O'Connor said. "I think it shook people up a little bit. I told them they need to perform to their potential and they did."

O'Connor also added that this freshman class has serious potential.

"We recruited a great class and they have brought competitiveness," O'Connor said. "Everyone is looking over their shoulder knowing their spot isn't safe with these freshmen."

The Owls take the field again next Sunday August 28 as they travel up Broad Street to take on Big 5 rival La Salle. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
