Women’s Soccer Tops NJIT for First Home Win of Season
9.18.16 | Women's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's soccer gets their first home win of the season over the NJIT Highlanders Sunday afternoon, 2-0.
Temple moves to 3-6 on the season and snaps a four-game losing streak. While the Highlanders continue their losing streak, dropping to 4-4-2.
The Owls offense came out ready to score. Just 3:15 into the game, a foul was called on the Highlanders, giving Temple an opportunity 25 yards out. Senior Elaine Byerley took the free kick for the Owls. After Byerley took a hard shot toward the net, senior Taylor Matsinger tipped the ball to senior Cydney Niedermeyer who smashed the shot into the back of the net. The goal marked Niedermeyer's first goal as a Temple Owl and Matsinger's first career assist.
The next score came during the 50th minute when redshirt-junior Kayla Cunningham took a corner for the Owls. Cunningham put the ball into the box for freshman Morgan Morocco who took a header over the shoulders of NJIT goalkeeper Amelia Sapirman. The score marked Morocco's second career goal and Cunningham's first assist of the season.
On the day, Temple finished with 10 shots as a team and seven corner kicks. Sophomore Sarah McGlinn led the team with four shots of her own.
In net, sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Nash finished the day with seven saves and her third shutout of the season. In all of the team's victories this season, Nash is yet to allow a goal.
Head coach Seamus O'Connor said he was happy to see his team pick up the win, even if it was a rough game.
"We had to dig in and work hard," O'Connor said. "It definitely wasn't one of our prettiest but I think that was kind of what we wanted to do today – just fight, scrape and rebound from Thursday."
The Owls have a quick turnaround as they head on the road on Tuesday against Lehigh. The match is set to start at 5:00 p.m.
