Men's Soccer Comes from Behind to Take Down Pitt 2-1
9.2.16 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – After a 37-year hiatus of competition, Temple men's soccer grabbed its third win of the season over the Pittsburgh Panthers, a team they have not met since 1979. Despite falling behind by a single goal in the first half, the Owls were able to post two goals in the second half to secure the victory.
"When you give up an early goal at home it makes for a long day," said head coach David MacWilliams. "To the guys credit, we switched formations at half time, changed it up a bit and I thought they played well the second half. They battled and it was a great win for us."
Following plenty of pressure and close shots for the Owls, the Panthers' leading forward Kevin Angulo grabbed a breakaway ball drawing Alex Cagle out of the net. With Cagle out, Angulo was able to sneak past for an easy slide in to lift his team to the early lead.
Through the remainder of the first half, the Owls managed to fire off nine shots without breaking past the Panther defense or goalkeeper Mikal Outcalt.
As the second half opened, opportunities were coming from all sides of the Owl offense. After numerous shots that were both saved by Outcalt and bouncing off every post and crossbar, Carlos Moros Gracia was able to capitalize on a rebounded shot from Joonas Jokinen and get one past the Panthers keeper to tie the game.
"We wanted to get the ball in the box a little bit more in the second half," said MacWilliams. "We got some more opportunities and it worked out well for us."
With less than five minutes remaining and a tie score still up on the scoreboard, George McGee was able to find Jorge Gomez Sanchez in perfect position to boot in the game-winning goal. Gomez Sanchez took eight shots throughout the full 90 minutes, finally finding the net on the final touch.
Overall, the Owls forced Outcalt to make eight impressive saves from their 20 total shots.
"I think today was a character check today for the guys, " said MacWilliams. "We were down 1-0 and [Pitt] is a very good team. We fought back against a very well-coached group."
Temple now stands at 3-0 in its 2016 campaign and look towards Sunday's match against Northeastern. The match is set to start at 12 p.m. at the Temple Sports Complex.
