Men's Soccer Falls to UConn 1-0 in American Athletic Conference Opener

9.24.16 | Men's Soccer

STORRS, Conn. – Opening 2016 American Athletic Conference play on Saturday evening, Temple men's soccer fell to UConn 1-0. With one goal finding its way to the back of the net for UConn, the Owls move to 5-3-0 overall and 0-1 in their American Athletics Conference schedule.

A scoreless first half saw pressure from both ends with Belal Mohamed firing off an early shot for the Owls that was stopped by Husky goalkeeper Scott Levene. Through the entire first 45 minutes, the Owls were able to let off three shots to the Huskies' five.

Alex Cagle held strong in net through the first half with four saves that kept the score at a 0-0 draw.

As the second half kicked off Mohamed added early pressure with a huge shot that Levene was able to save once again.

UConn was able to break a tough Owl defense to get on the board first in the 64th minute. A corner kick taken by Kwame Awuah found the head of Abdou Thiam, who blasted a shot to the back left of the net.

With the Huskies up by a goal, the Owls' offense went to work with shots from Matt Mahoney and Jorge Gomez Sanchez, as well as many strong breakaway runs, throughout the final 25 minutes. The UConn defense and goalkeeper Scott Levene were able to stop the runs and secure the 1-0 victory at the end of regulation, moving them to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

The Owls' next match will come on the road at Penn State. The Tuesday-night matchup is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
