LOS ANGELES – Making history for the Temple men's soccer program, Jorge Gomez Sanchez was selected by Vancouver Whitecaps FC this afternoon in the third round of the 2017 MLS SuperDraft. He now stands as the first Owl to be selected in the SuperDraft after earning first team All-Conference and ranking ninth all-time for career points with 62.
Prior to Gomez Sanchez's selection, head coach David MacWilliams had helped place six Owls in the pros: Tony Donatelli, Patrick Hannigan, Ryan Heins, Steven Wacker, Matt Maher, and J.T. Noone.
On Gomez Sanchez's pick, MacWilliams added, "I could not be happier for Jorge. I knew he was a special player from the first time I saw him and this is a goal he's expressed to me since then. He has been a tremendous player for us and I look forward to watching him succeed at the next level."
The selection, for Gomez Sanchez, is a dream and honor he has thought of since his recruitment. "I am very excited to have been selected in the draft," the Talavera de la Reina, Spain native noted. "This is where I have wanted to be since Coach Mac first visited me in Spain. I couldn't be more proud to represent Temple and Temple soccer in the MLS."
Gomez Sanchez is joined by fellow American Athletic Conference player Nazeem Bartman of USF, who was selected in the fourth round by the Whitecaps.
The 2017 MLS season kicks off the first weekend in March with the Whitecaps' first official match being held on the road against the New York Red Bulls on February 22 at 5 p.m.
