Field Hockey One of Top Teams for Number of NFHCA National Academic Squad Honors
3.28.18 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA - An impressive 18 student-athletes on Temple's field hockey team have been named to the 2017-18 Zag Field Hockey / NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad. That number is the highest-ever in program-history, surpassing even last year's huge number of 16 that earned the honor.
The Owls' 18 honorees are second in the BIG EAST only to Liberty with 20 on the list, and rank sixth among all Division I teams. Temple has consistently been among the top 10 or better in number of student-athletes to earn the award.
"We placed an incredible number of athletes on this list because of the value and focus our women place on their academic careers," said Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman. "They strive to excel in the classroom and I couldn't be more proud of this hard-working group of women."
The individual honors are the last to be announced, following the release of Temple as a Zag Field Hockey / NFHCA National Academic Squad and the announcement of freshman Dani Batze as a Scholar of Distinction.
Of the 18 Owls honored, senior Rachael Mueller has an asterisk by her name for being a four-year honoree.
"This is a tremendous accomplishment and I am so proud of this group of young ladies," said Tara Evans, Associate Director of the Nancy & Donald Resnick Academic Support Center for Student-Athletes. "They are dedicated to their academic success and do a phenomenal job balancing their academic and athletic responsibilities."
