Temple Hosts Annual Cherry and White Spring Game

PHILADELPHIA- Temple's annual Cherry White Game was held on Saturday, April 14, at the Temple Sports Complex for the first time ever with over 5,000 fans in attendance. The two teams were divided evenly as the TempleTUFF team in the white jerseys were coached by honorary captain Paul Palmer and the GDQ (Greatness Doesn't Quit) team in the cherry jerseys was coached by honorary captain Brian Baldinger. The GDQ squad was victorious with a 28-24 win over the TempleTUFF team. #TempleTUFF running back Ryquell Armstead was the leading rusher in the game in with three carries for 33-yards and two touchdowns while #GDQ's Jadan Blue was the game's leading receiver with six catches for 63-yards and three touchdowns.
Game Special Events
> TU AHA is a student organization at Temple that serves and mentors special needs athletes by accompanying them to various Temple athletic events. Today Angel Conlon & Matt Beckman from Athletes helping Athletes of Temple University joined the team on the field for the first play of the second quarter.
> At halftime, former Temple running back Paul Palmer was honored for his induction into the 2018 College Football Hall of Fame. Palmer was the first Owls' player ever to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
> Also at halftime, the senior members from the 2017 Temple football team were honored for their efforts in the 2017 Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl with their 28-3 bowl win this past year over FIU. They received their bowl rings.
First Quarter
> On the whitRyquell Armsteadrive , #GDQ's Michael Dogbe forced a fumble by #TempleTUFF's Ryquell Armstead that was recovered by Benny Walls, putting the #GDQ squad in great field position at their own 45-yard line.
> At the end of the first quarter, the scoreless streak was broken as Armstead raced 20-yards to give the TempleTUFF squad a 6-0 lead. The scoring play was the result of a 30-yard scoring drive led by TempleTUFF quarterback Frank Nutile.
Second Quarter
> To start the second quarter, Beckman was escorted on the field and plunged in a run for the #GDQ team, evening the game at 6-6.
> On the first play of the next possession, #TempleTUFF's Ty Mason intercepted a pass off GDQ's Anthony Russo for a 31-yard score to give the white team a 12-6 lead.
> After #TempleTUFF forced a quick three-and-out, Armstead scored his second touchdown of the game on an 11-yard run capping a 41-yard drive and giving thJadan BlueUFF team an 18-6 lead.
> The #GDQ team answered right back as Jadan Blue caught a 9-yard pass from quarterback Trad Beatty to end a 59-yard drive right before the half and cut the deficit to 18-12.
Third Quarter
> After a key stop on fourth-and-goal, Russo took the #GDQ team on a 79-yard drive that was capped off by an 8-yard touchdown throw from Russo to Blue. Russo also completed a two point conversion to Branden Mack giving #GDQ a 20-18 lead.
Fourth Quarter
> The #GDQ team kept its momentum going in the 4th quarter as Beatty led a 42-yard drive that resulted in a 3-yard scoring pass from Beatty to Blue for his third touchdown of the game. Mack's two-point conversion off a pass from Beatty increased the #GDQ lead to 28-18.
> The #TempleTUFF squad came firing back as Nutile rifled a 25-yard strike to Randle Jones to cut the deficit to 28-24. Unfortunately, time ran out as the #GDQ squad ended up with the victory.
