4.22.18 | Men's Golf

PALM HARBOR, Fla.  – Junior Gary McCabe and freshman Dawson Anders each shot a two-over 73 to pace Temple Golf in the first round of play at the 2018 American Athletic Conference Championship, presented by Visit St. Pete/Clearwater.  As a team the Owls were a 12-over 296 to place 7th of the 10 teams competing at the par-71, 7,125-yard Copperhead Course at the Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club.

Tournament Notes
> McCabe and Anders are tied for 16th overall, just three shots back of the leader, Cincinnati's Davis Baxter (70).
> Anders had five birdies on the day, tying for the most among the 50-competitors.
> Redshirt junior John Barone was next for the Owls with a three-over 74 to tie for 22nd overall
> Junior Trey Wren, who had three birdies on the day, rounded out the TU scorers with a five-over 76 to tie for 37th overall.
> USF, ranked 21st in the nation, had four golfers shoot even par and leads the field with a 284.    UCF is in second, five shots off the pace (289) with SMU (290) one stroke back in third.

Quotable
"It was a tough day to play as 70 was the low round. We left a lot of strokes on the golf course. John, Trey and Dawson each could have been three to four shots better.  We will need to improve upon our short game tomorrow." – Temple head coach Brian Quinn.

Next
> The Owls are paired with Houston for round two and tee off from the 10th hole at 8:17am Monday.
