PALM HARBOR, Fla. – Looking for its best showing at the American Athletic Conference Championship, Temple Golf improved five shots from its first round and is tied for fifth following day two of the three-day, 54-hole tournament. As a team the Owls are 17-over 587 and tied with East Carolina among the 10 teams competing at the par-71, 7,125-yard Copperhead Course at the Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club.
Tournament Notes
> Redshirt junior John Barone shot a one-over 72 Monday and leads the Owls and is tied for 14th with a four-over 146.
> Junior Trey Wren, who had four birdies on the day, had the best round for the Owls at even-par. Wren, who leads TU with seven birdies in the two rounds, is tied with teammate Gary McCabe for 19th overall with a five-over 147.
> Senior Mark Farley was the final scorer for the Owls, bouncing back from an opening round 81 to shoot a three-over 74 Monday
> USF, ranked 21st in the nation, leads the field by 19 strokes over SMU with three of their four golfers among the top five individually. USF's Claudio Correa tops the 50-man field with a four-under 138.
> The Owls have not finished higher than eighth in their five year history in The American.
Quotable
"We played solid. Trey (Wren) and John (Barone) played well. John gave a few (strokes) back, but hung in there and birdied the last hole. Mark (Farley) was MVP though. He made a big rebound from yesterday. We just need to have the kids tryst themselves a little more and then we will be pretty good." – Temple head coach Brian Quinn.
