Brown and Howard Win Silver Medals on the Final Day of the AAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships
5.13.18 | Women's Track and Field
CINCINNATI - Two silver medals highlighted the final day of competition at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships for Temple track & field. Freshman Aisha Brown took second in the high jump with an impressive, personal-best performance, while sophomore Millie Howard earned her third-ever AAC medal by placing second in the 1,500 meter.
1,500 Meter Final
> Howard earned her third-ever AAC medal with her second-place finish in a time of 4:25.03, earning eight points for the Owls.
> Sophomore Grace Moore placed sixth in 4:34.62 to earn three points, and senior Katie Pinson finished her collegiate career with a seventh-place finish in 4:38.45 to earn two points.
> Howard's PR of 4:21.02 from the Ole Miss Classic had already qualified her to race at the NCAA East Region Preliminary later this month.
"We started off well with Millie's performance today. We expected that and she really came through very well with a good performance, along with Grace and Katie who also ran well. We have a lot of expectations in many areas and we felt we met some in some ways and fell short in others, but the level of competition in the conference has improved so much in the last three years and our athletes realize they have to keep raising the bar." - Head coach Elvis Forde
High Jump
> Brown battled it out with defending champion Loretta Blaut of Cincinnati, as both were the only two to advance from a height of 1.79 meters.
> With the bar at 1.82 meters, Brown cleared it first on her second attempt, but Blaut made it on her third attempt and went on to clear 1.85 as well.
> Brown's final mark of 1.82 meters (5' 11.5") surpassed her previous personal best of 1.78, and as of the beginning of the weekend would have tied her for 11th place in NCAA Division I so far this season. She will go on to compete at the NCAA East Region Preliminary in two weeks.
> Freshman Kayla Nesbitt-McEwen also had a strong showing, placing tied for seventh with a mark of 1.70 meters to score one and a half points for Temple.
"Kayla did well to finish seventh and we know she can do even better, so her future moving forward is very bright. For Aisha, coming in as a freshman and having the kind of year she's had, even with just half a season (Brown also plays women's soccer at Temple) and joining us in January, it's incredible. She was just barely off the school record. Moving forward over the next three years, if she stays healthy and continues to have same drive to be one of the very best, not just at Temple but across the country, it bodes very, very well for the future. Her performance I would say was the highlight of the week for us." - Coach Forde
800 Meter Final
> Freshman Helene Gottlieb crossed the line in fourth with a new personal-best time of 2:07.96, almost two seconds faster than her previous PR.
> Coming in sixth just one hour after her silver-medal showing in the 1,500 was sophomore Millie Howard in a time of 2:09.11.
"Helene came through at the level we expected for her. We knew it would be a tough double for Millie and she was still able to pick herself up and be a point-scorer, so we were very excited to see that happen." - Coach Forde
Javelin
> Freshman Julianne Foering set a new personal record with a throw of 40.86 meters, placing 12th for the Owls.
Triple Jump
> Freshman Candus Burks placed 16th with a mark of 11.37 meters.
5,000 Meter Run
> Freshman Michelle Joyce placed 19th overall in 18:12.50. Junior Katie Leisher started the race but was unable to finish (heat exhaustion).
4x400 Meter Relay
> The Owls' team of Sydney Williams, Ebonee Jackson, Mallorie Smith and Gottlieb won their heat in 3:46.46, the best time for a 4x4 Temple relay this season.
> Overall, the relay placed eighth and earned a point in the scoring column.
Team Standings
> Temple placed 11th overall with 36.5 points, matching its finish from 2017.
Final Thoughts
> "We didn't get the kind of points we needed to move up (in the standings), but the quality of the efforts we got and the class of athletes we have makes us very optimistic for the future. Most of our point-scorers were freshmen and sophomores, so our future is very bright. I'm disappointed with how we ended up but excited about the overall performances. We just need to keep getting better every year." - Coach Forde
