Lacrosse's Latgis and Gebert Earn All-BIG EAST Honors

5.2.18 | Women's Lacrosse

NEW YORK - Senior defender Nicole Latgis was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team while sophomore midfielder Maddie Gebert earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors in a vote by the league's 10 head coaches. The honor is the second for Latgis, who was named to the BIG EAST Second Team as a junior.

Latgis is among the league's very top defenders, and her numbers this season proved it. She leads all players in the BIG EAST with 2.24 caused turnovers per game and 3.18 ground balls per game, ranking 11th in NCAA Division I in caused turnovers and 14th in ground balls. She finished the season with 38 caused turnovers to rank fourth all-time at Temple in a single season. With 64 caused turnovers in her career, Latgis ranks eighth all-time.

Also strong on the draw, Latgis tied for second on the team this year with 41 draw controls. She achieved her first career point as a senior with an assist in the Owls' 12-8 season-opening win vs. Rutgers. She was unanimously named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, and was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on March 27 after the Owls upset #22 Denver and recorded a double-overtime win vs. Cincinnati.

Gebert led Temple with 33 goals and 40 total points in 2018. She recorded five hat tricks over the course of the season and scored a career-high six goals while adding two assists at Villanova in late April. Gebert scored three game-winning goals for the Owls including the winner in a 10-9 upset of #22 Denver and the double-overtime winner in a 9-8 win vs. Cincinnati. She started in 16 of 17 games as a sophomore and recorded 27 ground balls, 12 draw controls and 12 caused turnovers.

Connecticut's Grace Nolan was voted BIG EAST Attacker of the Year, Florida's Sydney Pirreca and Marquette's Grace Gabriel were named Co-Midfielders of the Year, UConn's Cassie Ekstrom was tabbed Defensive Player of the Year, Florida's Haley Hicklen was selected Goalkeeper of the Year, Denver's Quintin Hoch-Bullen and Florida's Shannon Kavanagh shared Freshman of the Year honors, and Amanda O'Leary and the Gators claimed Coaching Staff of the Year recognition.

The Owls finished the 2018 season at 9-8 overall and 4-5 in the BIG EAST, just barely missing out on a spot in the conference tournament. Next year, Temple will join the American Athletic Conference which is sponsoring women's lacrosse for the first time in 2018-19.
