Field Hockey's Lucy Reed Recaps NCAA Career in Sports Forum

6.7.18 | Field Hockey, General

Field hockey's Lucy Reed and women's gymnastics graduated senior Sahara Gipson recently returned from the NCAA Career in Sports Forum, held May 31-June 3 in Indianapolis, Ind. The two were among just 200 student-athletes nationwide to be selected to attend. The Career in Sports Forum, an annual educational forum hosted by the NCAA, brings together student-athletes to learn and explore potential careers in sports, with the primary focus on college athletics. This unique, four-day forum is designed to assist student-athletes in charting their career paths, as well as provide an opportunity to network and learn from current athletics professionals. Reed now shares her thoughts on the experience with OwlSports.com.

This past week, I was fortunate enough to have been selected among 200+ other student-athletes to attend the 2018 Career in Sports Forum in Indianapolis. The forum took place at the NCAA headquarters and included speakers and panelists from various academic and athletic institutions throughout the United States. As a public relations major in the Klein College of Media and Communication, prior to this year, I had not considered or explored a career within collegiate athletics. Not until my participation within the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) did I realize that collegiate athletics and student-athlete affairs hold a passion in which I am extremely excited to pursue as my career path. The 2018 CSF further confirmed my goals of working within student-athlete affairs and created an entirely new perspective for me to carry through my journey of reaching my post-graduate goals.

Over the course of the four-day forum, we were immersed with information and knowledge that led us to a much deeper understanding of the value of working in collegiate athletics. We engaged with panelists, speakers and actively participated in workshops alongside professionals within collegiate athletics. Speakers included employees within the national office, conference offices and campuses. We explored the different roles that occur within these offices while also learning about divisional perspectives and the different roles and rules between Division I, II and III.

I feel the reason that the CSF is so unique and meaningful to student-athletes pursuing a career in athletics is attributed to the fact that the spectrum of knowledge and experience that we are exposed to at the forum ranges from graduate assistants and interns, to Power 5 FBS conference Athletic Directors. Whether you were interested in coaching, compliance or becoming an athletic director, you were represented through the speakers and panelists and able to interact with professionals in your field. There was not an "us vs. them" divide between the student-athletes and the professionals that have 20+ years of experience. The relationships formed were honest and almost every speaker closed with their personal contact information and genuinely advised to get in contact and stay in touch with them as they would be resources in any way that they can through our personal course to becoming a professional in athletics.

On the last day of the CSF, we were asked "what's your why?" One of my biggest takeaways from the 2018 CSF was a quote from University of Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel during an informational session. "As an employee within collegiate athletics, your job is to deliver dreams."

This quote particularly stuck with me because it gave me a completely new perspective of my own goals and values as I strive to become a professional within this field. Through the 2018 CSF, I was able to find my "why." I have received more out of this experience than I could have ever imagined from not only the speakers and panelists, but from the 200+ other motivated and inspiring student-athletes in attendance. I left Indianapolis with priceless knowledge, connections and friends and am extremely excited to take the next steps in my journey towards becoming a professional within collegiate athletics!
