PHILADELPHIA – David Hodgson, who has over 15 years of coaching experience, has been named an assistant women's soccer coach at Temple University, announced the Owls' head coach Seamus O'Connor.

"I am so excited to be able to add David Hodgson, who is coming to us after coaching some of the best women's soccer players in the world at the professional level in the NWSL," said O'Connor.  "His knowledge, drive and positive personality are going to have an immediate impact on our program and put us in a position to compete for a conference title.  I am so happy for our players to get the opportunity to be coached by David.  He cares for his players first as people and then as players and he is just as passionate about their development as people as he is about their development as players.
David and my current assistant, Paula Jurewicz, both played for me and know what I expect from my players, which i think will help make us a very successful coaching staff."

Hodgson most recently served in the roles of head sports scientist, assistant coach, and interim head coach of Sky Blue FC in the National Women's Soccer League over the past two seasons.

"I'm extremely excited to begin working with Seamus, Paula and the players here at Temple University," said Hodgson. "It's a great opportunity for me to work in elite collegiate athletics, and to help assist in a soccer program rapidly moving in the right direction. Temple University and the athletic department share my core values on coaching, developing players, and mentoring student-athletes. I have come to Temple to win. I will offer all my experiences and ideas to assist Seamus and the players in achieving a conference title. I'm all in."

Hodgson began his coaching career as an assistant coach for the women's soccer team at St. Peter's College in Jersey City, N.J in 2003.   He then moved to Drew University for the first of two stints (2004-08) with a stint as the head women's coach at Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pa. sandwiched in between.

In 2008-09 Hodgson joined the Sky Blue FC staff as an assistant coach in the W-League. He was named the head coach at Rutgers University in Camden, N.J. in 2015 where guided the Raptors for two seasons.

A member of the Girls Region 1 ODP staff, Hodgson also is the head club soccer coach with the Players Development Academy out of Westampton, N.J., including the 18 PDA Force, a team which was the U-17 NPL National Champion.

Hodgson graduated from the University of Worcester in the United Kingdom in 2000 with a B.S. in Sports & Exercise Studies. He received his ESL/TEFL Diploma through Cambridge University in 2000, allowing him to teach English as a second and foreign language, and obtained a M.S. in Exercise Science and Health Promotion from California University of Pa. in 2013.

This is not the first time that Hodgson and O'Connor have been together on the pitch as O'Connor coached Hodgson in 2003 with the Reading Rage of the United Soccer League.

A native of Liverpool, England, he resides with his wife, Melissa, and son Jude in Hamilton, N.J.

What they're saying about Hodgson:

Sam Kerr: Australia & Chicago Red Stars
"My time playing under Dave was very memorable. Dave is a leader and someone every player wants to play for. He not only cares about the development of his players, but who they are as people. I believe Dave will be successful wherever he goes based on who he is as a person, and I'm sure Temple University will benefit from his coaching style. Women's football needs more people like Dave, who care more about the growth of individuals. He brought out the best in me and made me think in ways I had never thought before. It was a pleasure to be coached by him and work for him."

Nikki Stanton: Chicago Red Stars
"Dave is an extremely passionate and knowledgeable coach. He cares about each and every player and is driven to develop each individual. His enthusiasm is contagious and so is his love for the game. I have no doubt he will be a success with the Temple women's program."
