Randall Selected to Bednarik Award Watch List
7.16.18 | Football
PHILADELPHIA - Senior safety Delvon Randall was named to the 2018 Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List after his consistency in the Temple secondary over the past two seasons.
Â
The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1995. Chuck Bednarik, former standout at Penn and with the Philadelphia Eagles, is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame's Class of '69 and the NFL Hall of Fame's Class of '67.
Randall continues a trend of Temple players being named to the watch list including 2015 Bednarik Award winner Tyler Matakevich, and Sean Chandler, who was named to the watch list in 2016 and 2017. Randall recorded 80 total tackles for the Owls in 2017, including 6.5 tackles-for-loss. He recorded his first sack and matched his career-high with four interceptions. Over the past three years, Randall has been a staple of the Temple secondary, undoubtedly one of the leaders of one of the top defenses in the country.
Â
He also has been a great example of consistency, playing in all 41 games since his freshman year. He's improved or equaled his number of tackles and interception total each of his first three seasons, which benefits him going into his final year with the Owls.
Â
This is the first time that Randall has been named to the watch list. He is one of 11 safeties on the list and one of just four players from the American Athletic Conference.
Â
Semifinalists for the Bednarik Award will be announced October 29, 2018, while the three finalists will be unveiled November 19, 2018. The winner of the 2018 Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on December 6, 2018. The formal presentation will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Tropicana Hotel & Casino Atlantic City on March 8, 2019.
The Bednarik Award is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football. The 24 awards boast over 750 years of tradition-selection excellence. Visit www.NCFAA.org to learn more.
