7.20.18 | Football
PHILADELPHIA - Temple redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Matt Hennessy was named to the 2018 Rimington Trophy Preseason Watch List. Hennessy was also named to its Spring watch list, honored as one of the best centers in the country.
Â
Last season, Hennessy, as a redshirt freshman, started 12 of the Owls' 13 games, including their Gasparilla Bowl victory over FIU. Hennessy is one of 27 returning players to the watch list, and he was the only freshman named to the 2017 watch list.
Â
A perfect blend of size, strength and intelligence, Hennessy leads the offensive line by making all the protection calls. Originally recruited by Harvard, he holds a 3.6 GPA in business management. The Bardonia, N.Y., native attended Don Bosco Prep.
Â
The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the most outstanding center in NCAA Division I College Football. Since its inception, the seventeen-year old award has raised over $3.6 million for the Boomer Esiason Foundation, which is committed to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis.
Â
Dave Rimington, the award's namesake, was a consensus first-team All-America center at the University of Nebraska in 1981 and 1982, during which time he became the John Outland Trophy's only two-time winner as the nation's finest college interior lineman. Hennessy is the fifth Temple player to be named to a preseason award watch list this week, joining quarterback running back Ryquell Armstead (Doak Walker Award), Frank Nutile (Maxwell Award), safety Delvon Randall (Chuck Bednarik Award) and tight end Kenny Yeboah (John Mackey Award).
