Over five years as the head coach of Temple’s men’s and women’s cross country and track & field teams, Eric Mobley has continued to elevate the program’s standing at the conference, regional and national level. As the Owls now move into the newly-created American Athletic Conference for the 2013-14 season, Mobley has the team poised to not only take on the challenge, but to excel.

Mobley’s men’s and women’s track & field teams have earned some impressive finishes at the conference level over his tenure, most notably in 2010 when the women’s team won its first-ever title at the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships and Mobley was named Coach of the Year.

One of the greatest success stories during Mobley’s tenure so far has been the achievements of Travis Mahoney (’13). Over a five-year running career at Temple, which stemmed from 2008-12, Mahoney won seven Atlantic 10 Conference individual championships, three A-10 Outstanding Performer of the Year awards, a Mid-Atlantic Athlete of the Year honor and, most notably, three NCAA All-American titles. After earning two All-American honors in track, Mahoney used his final season of eligibility during the 2012 cross country season and performed well enough at the NCAA Championships to become Temple’s first-ever All-American in the sport.

Also in the 2012-13 season, both track & field teams saw improvements from the indoor to the outdoor season. After the men’s and women’s teams both placed eighth at the A-10 Indoor Championship, the men’s team went on to place fourth at the A-10 Outdoor Championships while the women placed sixth. Junior Gabe Pickett, who had recently won the triple jump at the 2013 Penn Relays, placed second in the event at the A-10 Outdoor Championships. Margo Britton repeated as the women’s shot put champion at the A-10 meet and was named the Women’s Outstanding Field Performer.

Other successes at the 2013 Penn Relays included wins for the Temple 4x400m relay as well as for Kiersten LaRoche in the women’s long jump.

The 2011-12 season was a strong one on the women’s side, as the team earned a runner-up finish at the A-10 Outdoor Championships and a fourth-place finish indoors. Britton, who won the shot put at both meets, was named the Rookie of the Year.

Mahoney earned the program’s first-ever All-American First Team honor at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships, placing fifth in the 3000m steeplechase. Mahoney, Pickett and the 4x400m relay squad all placed as conference champions in their respective events at the 2012 A-10 Outdoor Championships, as the Owls placed third overall. During the indoor season that year, Mahoney won the mile and the 3000m, leading the team to a fourth-place finish and earning A-10 Performer of the Year honors.

Temple was well-represented at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on three occasions in the last few years, with Mahoney qualifying for the finals in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 2013. He also represented the Owls at the 2012 USA Track & Field Olympic Trials, as did Temple assistant coach Shameka Marshall.

In 2011, Mahoney and Bob Keogh earned All-American Second Team honors at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships, becoming the first Temple athletes to do so since 1994. The men placed third in the A-10 Outdoor Championships in 2011, with Mahoney earning Performer of the Year honors and Pickett taking home Rookie of the Year honors. The Owls’ women’s team earned sixth-place finishes at both the indoor and outdoor A-10 meets in 2011, while the men’s team tied for fourth indoors.

The 2009-10 season was a landmark year for Mobley and the Owls, as the women’s team took home its first-ever title at the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships, and Mobley was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year. The men’s team turned in a program-best second-place finish, with three athletes taking home gold medals. Earlier in that same season, Temple turned in best-ever finishes of third place at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Championships, where Mobley was also named the Coach of the Year for men’s indoor track & field.

Then-freshman Victoria Gocht was named the Most Outstanding Rookie Performer at the indoor championships, and then earned Rookie of the Year honors after the outdoor championships. Mobley also coached long-jumper Tim Boeni, who took home Most Outstanding Performer of the Year on the men’s side at the indoor meet. Boeni would go on to compete in the NCAA Championships, becoming the program’s first athlete in 15 years to qualify.

In Mobley’s first season as head coach in 2008-09, the Owls made history and broke several individual and school records. Many ECAC, IC4A, and NCAA Regional Qualifying marks were met by both squads, as the Cherry and White improved with every meet.

Mobley led the Temple teams to fourth-place finishes at the 2009 Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships. The fourth-place finish for the women was their best since 2003, and was highlighted by the selection of Paris Williams as Women’s Indoor Track Performer of the Year. To cap off a very successful indoor season, the women took third place at the ECAC Championships, their best finish in school history.

In the outdoor season, the men took a program-best third-place finish at the 2009 Atlantic 10 Championships, while the women placed fourth for a second year in a row. Ten athletes were sent to the NCAA East Regional, a school record, with several advancing to the finals in their respective events.

The Owls have performed well in the classroom during Mobley’s tenure, with the men and women each earning USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors twice (2009-10 and 2010-11 for the men, 2009-10 and 2011-12 for the women).

Mobley had previously spent two years as the top assistant at Temple from 2002-04 before returning in 2008 following a highly successful stint as the head coach at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ). While there, Mobley won 16 conference championships in four years and directed the Lions to every men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor New Jersey Athletic Conference championship from 2005-08. His athletes won 136 NJAC individual championships and earned 488 NJAC all-conference citations. Five Lions were named the conference's most outstanding male or female track athletes.

His success was not limited to the conference level while at TCNJ. Mobley produced 61 All-Americans, including two individual national champions and three national champion relays. The TCNJ women had five top 15 finishes at the NCAA Championships, including placing fourth outdoors in 2005. The men recorded a pair of top 15 performances at the NCAA Championships, including finishing 13th indoors in 2006. The 2007 Division III Men's Outdoor Atlantic Region Coach of the Year, Mobley was named the NJAC Coach of the Year seven times. A total of 33 school records were established at TCNJ during his tenure. His student-athletes excelled in the classroom as well, boasting three CoSIDA Academic All-Americans.

Prior to becoming the head coach at The College of New Jersey, Mobley served as an assistant at La Salle (1997-00), Akron (2000-02) and Temple (2002-04). While with the Owls, he led the women's program to its best-ever Atlantic 10 outdoor finish (third) and second-best indoor finish (third) in 2003. The men also posted their second best-ever A-10 indoor (fifth) and outdoor (sixth) finishes in 2003. Three Owls won the conference championship in 2003 with two Owls earning the A-10s Most Outstanding Field Athlete honors.

At Akron, the Zips set four school records under Mobley, and the men's 4x400 relay won the All-Ohio Conference title in 2002. Akron also experienced unprecedented success, posting the best-ever men's indoor and outdoor finishes at the conference championship.

Following a standout career at La Salle (1989-93) where he earned all-conference and all-East honors in the 400m, Mobley joined the Explorers' staff in 1997. He spent three seasons at La Salle, and was on the staff when the 1999 men’s cross country team won the school’s first-ever Atlantic 10 title. He also guided his athletes to four school records, a second-place finish in the 1998 A-10 Men's Indoor Championship and a third-place showing in the 2000 A-10 Women's Indoor Championship. Outdoors, the Explorer men and women each finished third at the 1998 A-10 Championship.

Mobley, a Philadelphia native (Central HS), earned his bachelor's degree in accounting from La Salle in 1993. He has Level I coaching certification and Level II certification in jumps from the USATF Coaches Education School.
