Betty Jane Leuchtner Howat was a member of Temple's women's swimming team from 1950-53 and played field hockey in 1953. She was captain of the swimming team in 1952 and junior varsity field hockey captain in 1953. She also played intramural lacrosse, and started her academic career at Tyler School of Art and therefore did not participate in athletics her freshman year. A diver on the swimming team and under the coaching of Pru Flemming, she placed third in the Eastern Intercollegiate meet during her career. Since graduation, she has had an outstanding coaching career on the high school, college, and club level. She coached at Temple from 1954-58. On the scholastic level, she guided Abington Friends School and William Tennent High School. She graduated from Temple with honors and won the Sword Award for service to the University. She was also in Chimes Honor Society and was president of the Magnet Senior Honor Society. She also served as WAA vice-president for two years. In her years at William Tennent, perennially had girls in the state championships and she never finished lower than second in the league.
