Gymnastics Coach at Temple University for 12 years, A. Carl Patterson earned the respect and admiration of his associates as a competitor, coach and teacher. His 1967-68 team won the Eastern Intercollegiate Gymnastics League title and finished fourth in the NCAA championships. For these achievements he was named Coach of the Year by his fellow coaches shortly before his untimely death in April, 1968. As a Temple undergraduate, Carl won two varsity letters in gymnastics. He joined the Temple faculty in 1955 and held the rank of assistant professor of Health and Physical Education. He was a member of the National Gymnastics Officials Association and judged the Olympic Tryouts in 1956 and 1960 and the Pan American Games Tryouts in 1959. In 1968 he served as president of the National Association of College Gymnastics Coaches. Patterson is survived by his wife Bert, two sons and a daughter. The sons are Temple men.Â
