Temple's first female athletic scholarship recipient, Carol Sauppe Kline led the Owls to their first national field hockey tournament in 1978. Coached by Temple Hall of Famer Tina Sloan Green, she was a four year standout for the Owls. She immediately became an impact player for Temple, leading the field hockey team in scoring for three straight seasons. In 1974 the entire Temple team scored only 11 goals. In 1975, her freshman season, she had 27 goals to set a University record. She had 12 goals against Beaver College for another Temple mark. She had numerous outstanding games during her career and had the hat trick in several important victories over teams like Pennsylvania, LaSalle, St. Joseph's and Eastern. She was also Boyertown High School's first female athletic scholarship winner and became the institution's field hockey MVP.
