Temple University has been blessed with many fine gymnasts and one of the best was Chester (Chet) Phillips who competed for three seasons under the late Max Younger. He was a three time National Collegiate All-Around champion and also won the Eastern Conference All-Around championship in 1935, 1936, and 1937. He made the United States Olympic Team in 1936 and competed at Berlin. He led the Owls to their first undefeated season in 1937 when Temple captured the Eastern championship. He also sparked the Owls to their first Eastern title in 1936 while starring on the parallel bars and the high bar. He was named to the Helms Foundation Hall of Fame in 1959. He coached the gymnastics team at Navy from 1939 to 1965 when he retired from coaching to concentrate on his current duties at the Academy as associate professor of Physical Education. He was named National Coach of the Year in 1961. His son Tim captained Temple's 1963-64 Eastern Intercollegiate Gymnastics League championship team.
