A 1948 graduate of Temple's School of Physical Education, Claire Alden Harden is being honored for her athletic accomplishments. She was a four-year member of Temple's field hockey, basketball and tennis squads. Captain of the 1947 field hockey squad, her team went 22-4-3 in four years. The Lady Owls basketball team won 45 of 47 games while she played. She played doubles at the number one and two spots for the Lady Netters. A recipient of the 1947 Blazer Award presented by the Temple Women's Athletic Association, she continued to keep active in athletics after her graduation. She was a member of the West Jersey field hockey team from 1948 until 1964. Her love for basketball flourished as she played in an industrial league from 1948 to 1954. Five years later, she began her basketball coaching career. She coached the Holy Cross High School team for 21 years, compiling a record of 235-124, including a championship in 1964. Her thorough knowledge of basketball and field hockey enabled her to officiate in the former for 10 years and the latter for 22 years. Never to leave a stone unturned, she was also involved in the administrative aspect of athletics. She has been awarded numerous accolades for her contributions to athletics. Included are the Distinguished Service Award (Field Hockey Club of South Jersey) and honorary memberships from the West Jersey and New Atlantic field hockey associations.
