A 1942 graduate and varsity swimmer during Temple's undefeated 1941 and 1942 seasons, Doris Cant Steadman was Senior Middle Atlantic Champion in 100 yard and 100 meter backstroke events 1937-42. She set four national intercollegiate records while at Temple, including the 40-yard backstroke, 24.8, stood from 1942-73, 50-yard backstroke, 32.2, stood until 1962, 75-yard backstroke, 44.5, and 100-yard backstroke, 1:11.7, were also national marks set in 1942. She established a new world record at the time of 36.0 for 50 meter backstroke in Lancaster, PA., July 1941.
