Elizabeth Hess was one of the premier athletes ever to participate at Temple University. She played four sports including field hockey, swimming, softball and lacrosse. As a pupil of Annie Volp, the four-year field hockey record stood at 18-8-4. Prudence Fleming also coached her, which helped them win the 50-yard fly and breaststroke in several All-College Championships. She served as captain of the 1956 squad, an honor she also had during the 1956 softball season. She played softball and lacrosse to round out what will be remembered as an accomplished athletic career for the Cherry & White. She was involved in synchronized swimming for 17 years, in coaching, swimming and performing. As a member of the National Governing Body of USSSI, she judged at several international team trials. In 1981, she was given the honor to serve as a judge for the National Sports Festival.
