Frances Henderson Newcomb was an all-around athlete in hockey, gymnastics, swimming, dance, lacrosse, tennis. She was the organizer of Saturday hockey league for TU Alumnae and was also a successful teacher and coach. She was a nationally rated official in hockey, basketball and lacrosse and was chairman of Examining Board of Philadelphia Field Hockey Association. She was the national president of Phi Delta Pi. She was a AHPER Honor Award recipient in 1948. She served as chairman of Department of Physical Education at Girls' High for 13 years at time of her death in 1956. Two awards are named in her honor- one at Girls' High; the other by Philadelphia Chapter of Phi Delta Pi.
