Fred Barlow

An outstanding all-around athlete, Fred Barlow earned eight varsity letters at Temple. He starred in soccer and baseball where he won four letters in each sport and was a co-captain for both teams. He earned All-American honors in soccer in 1948 and was selected for the Olympic trials. He received honorable mention recognition on the 1947 All-American squad. He set the Temple record for goals scored in one season in 1947 and scored the winning goal against Penn State that gave the Owls an undefeated season. In 1950, he signed a professional contract with the Philadelphia Americans of the American Soccer League. He was a four year varsity starter at third base for the baseball team and signed a bonus contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1950. He played in the Pirates farm system while attending the Temple Dental School where he graduated in 1954.
