First Temple athlete to win an Olympic gold medal, Jean Shiley Newhouse was captain of the 1932 Women's Track and Field Olympic team. World and Olympic record holder from 1932-1948 in high jump (5'5 ¼"), she also was the holder of indoor and outdoor World record in high jump from 1929-1932. She was a member of the All-Philadelphia Field Hockey team in 1931. She served as vice-president of the Student Council in 1932. She was a member of the Helms Track and Field Hall of Fame and member of the United States Track and Field Hall of Fame. She was also a member of Board of Directors of the Southern California chapter of the United States Olympians.
