One of Temple's finest boxers, Joe Brown competed in 1927, 1928 and 1929 and earned letters each season. He was captain of the 1928 team. He boxed both as a light heavyweight and heavyweight although he never weighed more than 175 pounds. He lost only two bouts during his Temple career and was undefeated in 1929. He was unbeaten in nine bouts as a professional, reaching main bout status. Brown became interested in sculpturing as a senior. Honored frequently, he did all of the statues of Temple's McGonigle Hall. He became a member of the Princeton faculty in 1938 and is the only creative artist to ever have obtained full professional rank there at the time. Joe joined the Princeton faculty as an instructor of boxing, but in 1939 he became the University's first teacher of sculpture.
