Rogers, John

John Rogers

John Rogers was captain of the 1948 Temple football team and was voted the Owls’ Outstanding Player that season. He earned All-East and honorable mention All-American honors. He first entered Temple in 1942, served in World War II from 1943 to 1945 and returned to the Owls in 1946. He played in the 1946 and 1948 Blue-Gray all-star games. He played in the Canadian Football League with Ottawa and earned Canadian All-Pro honors. He was appointed an assistant football coach at Temple in 1956 and was promoted to assistant head coach in 1960. He was also the head wrestling coach from 1956 to 1968. He had 10 consecutive winning wrestling seasons and produced Temple’s first NCAA champion in Wayne Boyd who was inducted into the Temple Hall of Fame in 1978. Many of his wrestlers were EIWA champions. He served as president of the EIWA. He is Temple’s winningest wrestling coach.
